Maté has helped bring the inseparability of mind, body, stress, adaptation, and relationship into public conversation. His work asks us to consider what happens when the adaptations that once helped us survive become disconnected from our deeper emotional and physical needs.

The goal is not to replace thinking with feeling. It is to restore the relationship between them.
When the body is ignored, its signals do not necessarily disappear. They may grow louder, become harder to interpret, make us ill, or shape our behavior outside our awareness.

And when nervous-system activation overwhelms reflective capacity, we can react before we understand, protect when no protection is needed, withdraw when we want connection, or say things that do not reflect who we want to be.
